Learning to write: what posture and furniture for the child?

Last modified on 30 January 2026

Summary

Why should a child adopt a good writing posture?

To write well, you must begin by adopting a good writing posture. An unsuitable posture can lead to muscle pain, fatigue, tension, and, in the long term, the development of chronic pain or musculoskeletal disorders. These discomforts impair the fluidity of movement and gesture (due to the restricted position), writing speed, and legibility.
For learning to write, poor posture excessively mobilizes the student's attention to the detriment of their concentration, endurance, and enjoyment of writing.

Conversely, a good posture promotes proper movement, improves the fluidity of gestures, and results in high-quality writing. To achieve this, attention must be paid to the ergonomics of the workstation: posture also depends on the environment (desk height, support from the floor, etc.).

Children with learning disabilities will be more sensitive to the posture they adopt when learning to write. To encourage a more dynamic posture, you can opt for ergonomic and adjustable furniture (seat ball, dynamic seating stool, tilting work desk).
It will allow for easier movement without losing focus. It will also be important to alternate positions regularly and take regular breaks to release physical tension and thus better regain concentration and engagement in learning.

How to set up a good writing environment?

To learn to write well, we must focus on adapting the various elements that surround the child during their writing learning process: choosing ergonomic furniture for the child to ensure a suitable workstation, the sitting position for writing, the child's pencil grip…

    Choosing a desk for writing

A child's desk must be adapted to their height. For this reason, the work surface should reach their elbows when they are seated.
Ideally, if you are in an establishment that welcomes children of all ages and sizes, you should opt for height-adjustable children's desks to accommodate the greatest number of children.
Alternatively, use our guide to choose the necessary table height.

The right foundation for good writing

The seat must also be adapted to the child's size. Here are a few guidelines:

    • with the soles of the feet flat on the ground,
    • The knees should be bent at a right angle when the feet are on the ground.,
    • The back must be perfectly straight.,
    • his torso slightly bent over the table.

As with tables, you can opt for height-adjustable chairs or rely on our size guide.

However, if your feet don't touch the ground properly, you can always opt for a footrest.

Body position at the desk for writing

The body must be parallel to the table. The sheet moves, not the body.
The sheet will be slightly tilted to the left for right-handed people (about 15 degrees) and slightly to the right for left-handed people (about 30 degrees).

Positioning your arm and hand to learn to write / holding your pencil

The hand should be positioned below the writing line and never above it, as this would block the movement of the hand.
The opposite hand, which is not writing, holds the sheet of paper at the top.

The pencil should be held between the thumb and middle finger, with the index finger then resting on top. The hand should be positioned neither too close nor too far from the pencil lead. The pencil should be angled so that it rests on the hand.
