Last modified on December 12, 2024

The practice of’Snoezelen® Space This approach was initiated by Jan Hulsegge, a music therapist, and Ad Verheul, an occupational therapist, in the Netherlands. It combines relaxation and non-directive sensory stimulation. The goal is to promote well-being in children so they can access the outside world through their bodies and five senses.

Snoezelen® : what is this ?

The Snoezelen philosophy®

The adult provides assistance by listening to the responses to stimuli. The philosophy Snoezelen® is based on three distinct, ritualized phases:

  • discovery and relaxation; ;
  • relaxation and sensory experiences; ;
  • interactivity and a return to reality.

Its application is very suitable for children with specific needs.

The origin of the Snoezelen method®

Snoezelen® is a contraction of two Dutch words: "snueffelen" (to sniff) and "doezelen" (to doze) which describe this approach combining relaxation and sensory stimulation.

The evolution of the Snoezelen method®

More and more nurseries and childcare facilities have a space dedicated to sensory experience, ...to well-being and relaxation, for the benefit of children but also of professionals and parents. In particular, those caring for children with special needs.

  • to promote the integration of children with disabilities; ;
  • to place empathy at the heart of the relationship; ;
  • to listen to the specific expression of each child being accompanied; ;
  • to solicit, based on what one perceives, areas of interest, without imposing them; ;
  • to mobilize sensory skills, in complete safety.

What equipment should I plan to use?

A dim light, of the soft mats, of the covers And soft cushions, flowing water, luminous and/or fluorescent objects, Soothing music, tactile objects, soft materials, and the scent of essential oils. In some nurseries, there are white rooms that promote visual stimulation.
