Adults are often advised to get down to a child's level to facilitate communication. Find out why in this new episode of the "Tell Me" series.
Why was this situation filmed?
Interactions between children and parents are very important. This video aims to show the importance of getting down to a child's level.
Tell me… what are the advantages of getting down to a child's eye level?
Sitting opposite each other, Amina and Jackson play with a doll, exploring the different sounds it makes. Later, Amina doesn't hesitate to put on enormous glasses and kneel down to join the children's games. Getting down to a child's level demonstrates genuine interest in what they do, what they say, and what they experience. It also lays the foundation for a relationship that respects the child's perspective, whether during playtime, mealtimes, or bedtime. Children feel recognized and valued when adults get down to their level because they are seen as individuals in their own right. This attitude from adults towards children helps to build a secure emotional bond, which will positively influence their relationships with others. By taking the time to get down to Bastien's level, Amina makes him feel how important he is. He fully appreciates this closeness and this caring attitude.
How to support the child?
- Take the time to approach the child, to crouch down to their level in order to speak directly to them or give instructions,
- When entering the realm of emotions (joy, anger, etc.), remember to get down to their level, what the Anglo-Saxons call "eye-to-eye," to better see each other and empathize.,
- Using "I" rather than "you": the child will not feel criticized and it provides a reproducible communication model.
